Clinical and diagnostic laboratory tests

The laboratory of the cardiology center ensures a wide range of tests. Let`s consider several indicators important in the development of cardiovascular disease.

Blood cholesterol

If you are at risk, it is especially important to monitor your cholesterol level. The risk factors are:

  • a family history of cardiovascular disease
  • a diagnosis of coronary heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease
  • excessive body weight
  • chronic inflammatory processes, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or HIV
  • diabetes or high blood pressure

Cholesterol can become an invisible enemy that would gradually take away your health. But this happens only if you do not control its level! Cholesterol is usually divided into “good” and “bad” one, but this designation is quite simplified. The balance is important for our body, since we cannot live without cholesterol either.

Blood sugar

Cardiovascular diseases account for a significant share of complications in diabetes patients. Diagnostics of diabetes is quite simple thing and can be done using a number of tests. Glycated hemoglobin test (HbA1c): Measures patient’s average blood glucose level over the previous 2-3 months and, therefore, is a good tool for long-term blood glucose control. HbA1c ≥6.5 % is a diagnostic criterion of the disease. Fasting Plasma Sugar Level: Checks fasting plasma glucose level, normally of the blood sampled fasting in the morning. Plasma sugar is an indicator of diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance test: Checks blood glucose level before and after oral glucose loading.

Troponin I test

Troponin I is a globular regulating protein containing in heart muscle cells and involved in muscle contraction. Troponin level is a marker of myocardial infarction. Troponin test confirms or excludes myocardial infarction in people with symptoms of this disease.

Elevated troponin I levels are also characteristic of the following diseases: myocarditis, heart failure, pulmonary artery thromboembolism, DIC syndrome, stroke, chronic coronary heart disease, unstable angina, heart surgery, and heart injury.

It is prescribed in case of the presence of myocardial infarction symptoms, monitoring and evaluation of acute coronary syndromes. It is a marker of myocardial cell damage.
